During their most recent season, Enloe softball has shattered all expectations with their incredible winning streak, bringing increased interest to the sport. The program at Enloe has now expanded to include both junior varsity and varsity sections, whereas only two years ago, they were able to fill only one team. Now, Enloe has a wonderful assortment of hardworking, intelligent, and adaptable players on the field. This season, softball at Enloe has been rejuvenated.
With a record of 5-3, the varsity Enloe softball team has had an objectively fantastic season. Mary Garland, varsity team captain, credits part of their success to the intense motivation of her teammates, saying, “Our drive this year is incredible. Everyone on our team wants to win so badly, resulting in our recent successes.” She goes on to credit this spirit in large part to the performance of two talented new members of the team, Jane Kiec and Lily Watson. Garland describes them as “both amazing young women who have been crucial to our success.” This trend doesn’t stop there. An irreplaceable part of the team is sophomore pitcher and fellow captain Avery Modlin. Modlin says she’s loved her sophomore year on varsity softball and expresses her gratitude, “I love hanging out with my teammates and playing games. The coaches have been working hard to improve the program, so overall I think it’s been a great experience so far.”
Individual player performances lead to victories; however, the team is the heart of softball. Leaning into the collaboration of the sport is the key to success. As JV player Amaia Larrea says, “Having good players certainly helps. But softball is a team sport […] if you have one good third baseman but not a good first baseman, that doesn’t help you. It’s like puzzle pieces.”
With such a tight-knit team, it’s no wonder Enloe softball has been excelling. Garland says such a committed team has created a bond that has led the team to victory, “I do think connection and community have been the biggest part of our success, and as we have continued to bond as a team, we’ve started playing more as a team and understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses”. She ends, “Team connection has always been incredibly important to us”.
Our hats are off to all the incredible girls of Enloe softball, and we at The Eagle’s Eye wholeheartedly encourage you to show up and show out to the team’s remaining games. Buy your tickets here.
