Nestled in the valley between the junior lot and the towers lies a hidden diamond: the varsity baseball team. One of the most dedicated teams at Enloe, they’ve been through their fair share of ups and downs. The team has faced numerous challenges in the past five years, from field conditions to coaching turnovers. Yet, despite it all, they have stayed motivated to win games and grow as a team. Now, they’re stronger than ever, with the skills and bonds to push them to success.
One unique aspect of the Varsity baseball team is their overwhelming senior-to-underclassmen ratio, with 13 of the players being from the class of 2025. While this might seem out of the ordinary, it makes perfect sense for these players. Most of the players on this iteration of the team have been playing together since their freshman year on the junior varsity team, and this kind of camaraderie is imperative to their improvement as a team. Will Modlin, an Enloe baseball player since his freshman year and a team captain, says, “Since freshman year, everyone has been there for each other.” Going on to cite their continued familiarity and connection as a source of their improvement, he says, “There’s definitely been improvements in how we work together that come with playing with people you’ve always known…I understand [the team] on a more personal level.” Because baseball is a sport that heavily relies on communication, no one player can make up for a team’s lack of cooperation. This kind of syncretic team skill is especially strong in Enloe’s baseball team, given their shared history and passion for the sport.
.
Because of the time they’ve spent together and the rollercoaster of changes, the team has formed an unbreakable bond. The benefits of this don’t stop just at better communication; it’s also meant that the Enloe team has a community that can uplift and support each other. This kind of energy is important on and off the field. For example, mutual understanding and support are key to creating the right tone before a game. Modlin describes the atmosphere before a game starts, saying, “Everyone’s really comfortable around everyone, we’re all getting ready to get out there.” He continues, emphasizing how this translates onto the field, “We can uplift ourselves better and have more fun, and you know when you’re having more fun you’re playing better.”
These ideal conditions have clearly made the season one of improvement. Ranking sixth in the conference, their win-loss ratio is already a great enhancement to last year’s. Enloe isn’t widely regarded as an athletic school, but varsity baseball is smashing the stereotype. Gabe Martinez, another team captain, also attributes this success to the mutual understanding the players have of each other, saying, “We have good team chemistry and we’re using it to be able to make plays. We’re always working, but the team has [each] others’ backs regardless of what happens.” It’s obvious that the safety net of a secure team has worked for these players.
It’s only the start of what’s already shaping up to be an exciting season. Our team’s hard work and practice are paying off to rocket our school to sports success, and make entertaining games in the process; in fact, later in the season, there’s a possibility for increasingly high-stakes championship games, which would surely be exciting spectacles. With warmer weather and longer days, come out to one of the baseball games to partake in this classic American pastime. Bring a friend and enjoy the diamond-in-the-rough that is Enloe Baseball!
