Angel Mitchell-Morris is graduating this year, a departure that will shake Enloe High School to its core. Her whimsy and unshakeable determination to do good will leave along with her, and it’s guaranteed their absence will leave a palpable void. Though we may miss her, it’s certain that in the future Angel is going to accomplish everything and more, aided by those unique characteristics.
Angel is diligent in everything that she does, and she does a lot. Her determination is unmatched and her prospects as impressive as they are varied. Angel is the type of person to put her whole heart into whatever she does, painlessly brushing off any setbacks. Time and time again, Angel proves to be an unstoppable force and therefore an indispensable peer. Her merits are obvious, not only as the president of the Butterfly Effect club and member of the Black Student Union, but as an excellent scholar. Whether it be essays or creative pieces, Angel loves to write, evident by her past as a staff writer on The Eagle’s Eye. Her positions are impressive not just nominally, but with the knowledge that she worked her way there with hard work and unrelenting determination. Co-Founder of The Butterfly Effect Lexi Chavis says, “Angel is an amazing leader and is incredibly passionate about the work that she does. She’s very diligent and will go the extra-mile to make things happen.”
These curricular accomplishments are no surprise when you consider her resilience in regards to the things she loves. Though don’t assume that this trait is limited to school, because Angel isn’t afraid to participate in a myriad of activities unbarred by the school bell. Outside of Enloe, she is a part of the Teen Advocacy Council (TAC) for the Clarence E Lightner Y Achievers program, a national ambassador for Justice for Black Girls, a member of the Raleigh chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc GEMS Program, and most recently a 2024 debutante through Alpha Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She’s not just involved in these programs, she goes above and beyond, evidenced by her being awarded Achiever of the Year in the Lighter Y Achiever program. Through these roles, she has been able to speak at various NC events such as the National Day of Racial Healing Community Dialogue and an annual fundraising campaign involving local and state stakeholders. Mr. Landesman attests, “She is very committed to doing as well as she can. When she struggles, she works her butt off to get it as best as she can, but she also understands that she’s not going to be perfect at everything but she’s going to try to be the best she can however she can.”
You might be wondering how it’s even possible for someone to function with this much on their plate. Well, if so, let me tell you something that you may find shocking, that Angel happens to be an avid indulgent in the vast world of athletics. Starting off, she was a member of JROTC for three years, which is ¾ of a high school lifespan. She’s an overachiever in sports, too, which at this point is to be expected when you take into account her attitude towards the things she loves. She’s not just a varsity track and field participant competing in the shot put event, though that would be impressive on its own, but she’s also a softball player at the very same time. Two athletic activities means double the time devoted to the practice, a feat that would prove nearly impossible for a normal student, but feels deftly appropriate when it comes to Angel.
Now, at this point you might be thinking that Angel is ridiculous for spending all of her time on activities, when that time would be better spent maintaining friendships and forming strong relationships. On the contrary, Angel is no slacker in this department either. “Even though she was only a freshman, she would pull me aside and share such creative and meaningful ideas to spark positive change at Enloe and in our community. I was so impressed and inspired by her willingness to help and how much of a natural leader she is,” says Lexi. With her extroverted personality, she effortlessly makes new friends and somehow always finds the time for them. She loves talking to new people and has no problem striking up conversations with whoever crosses her path, creating a stream of constant socialization despite her busy lifestyle. “She genuinely cares about the people in her life and puts her all into everything that she does… Angel has always been such a thoughtful and supportive friend to me. Even after I graduated from Enloe, she continued to reach out to me not just to keep in touch but to also check on how I was doing. She’d also reach out to get advice about school, post-grad life, and The Butterfly Effect. She’s such a sweet soul and I’m proud to call her a friend,” finishes Lexi.
Angel manages to juggle all of her responsibilities in a way that appears effortless, but to end your tenure at Enloe with a legacy so very lauded is anything but effortless. And through it all, Angel’s positive attitude is unwavering, which has to be the most impressive part. She will be dearly missed here at Enloe, but it’s comforting to know that Winston-Salem University will no doubt benefit immensely in Angel’s presence. Have fun in college, Angel!
