This year something revolutionary happened at the Golden Globes: movies won awards. The visibly bitter host, Jo Koy, made a couple of bad jokes, pissing off Taylor Swift, Greta Gerwig, and Ryan Gosling. That’s not important though, the only thing that matters is how they looked doing it.
Ghost!
An extremely upsetting theme this year on the red carpet was that of pale colors on equally pale women. Emma Stone and Christina Ricci both arrived in nude-colored dresses with applique trailing down to the carpet, while the dresses were beautifully made, they washed out the two women horribly. To make it worse, Elle Fanning, Hunter Schafer, Natasha Lyonne and Dylan Mulvaney all decided to follow the trend of neutral pinks and whites, all, in my opinion, far too pale for the beautiful white women of the Golden Globes. Let’s try some jewel tones next time.

Prom
The red carpet is defined as between conceptual and functional, what is not the appropriate stop on that spectrum for the Golden Globes is the prom dress. With the sole purpose of looking shimmery and flattering, red carpet fashion should take some risks. So while Taylor Swift and Jennifer Aniston most definitely would be the best dressed at a 2017 prom, I wish they went a little more avant-garde.

Put on a Necklace
Necklaces: one of many fallen to minimalism. This year’s stylists seem to have fallen into the trap that in order to look classy and elegant, you must forgo any personality or extravagance. On a red carpet, apparently, collar bones must be bare. But looking at the likes of Natalie Portman, Fantasia Barrino, and Ayo Edebiri, we can all agree that maybe a choker, string of pearls, or some awful chunky diamond-encrusted necklace could do them well. It’s about balance. Carey Mulligan might come to mind for this point, but you’d be wrong. Her upper bodice dripping with gemstones makes for the lack of a necklace. Just goes to show that jewelry is a powerful part of fashion, and should be carefully considered, never ignored.
Man
For diversity purposes, I will be discussing this year’s men. Timothee Chalamet, looking a little ratty, kissed Kylie Jenner, who looked like his chaperone on a first-grade field trip. Cillian Murphy looked like he was about to burst into tears, as usual. Jeremy Allen White was also in attendance, but I have nothing else to say about him.

Stop it
The mermaid dress epidemic this year is another deeply unsettling and surprising trend. Something about this season’s red carpets has created an environment too welcoming of a flare an inch below the knee, often in a different fabric. Whether you call it a trumpet, a fit and flare, or a mermaid, it doesn’t matter: they are all the worst of the low-rise silhouette. Dua Lipa should’ve cut off that plastic flare and wore a mini skirt to the Golden Globes. The only person allowed to wear this style ever again is Danielle Brooks.

Color Is Calling Your Name
If the 2000s came back last year, the 2010s are knocking on our door in the form of no blush all contour makeup looks. Reese Witherspoon is begging for some color in her face and y’all won’t give it to her. Karen Gillian in her jumpsuit was colorless. Of all the styles to borrow from 2012, the Kardashian-inspired lack of color is not the one. Especially with the nude lips, dark eyes, and matte coverage this year, not the move.

Best Dressed
All in all the best-dressed spot was a highly contested one, staff writers Danica Cheaz and Laura Kohli fought for Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep respectively, while editor Elizabeth Sobel just thought this year was “better than last year.” However, the official Eagle’s Eye best-dressed-number-one spot goes to Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s red-wine, scalloped, and vintage-looking gown. No notes at this time please!
