As fall drifts upon us, the season brings us far more than just sweet-smelling air and crisp leaves. A time filled with such nostalgia is aptly known for the unique fashion that follows. We hope to combine the nostalgia of our favorite fall films with the spirit of fall fashion in order to reign in the season and manifest the resurgence of these iconic styles!
Chunky Sweaters
Who doesn’t love cuddling up in a chunky sweater by the warm, toasty fire? A chunky sweater is the easiest way to dress up an outfit on a lazy day, allowing one to appear put-together, classy, and festive. As seen on Chris Evans’ charismatic character Ransom Drysdale in the hit mystery Knives Out, the chunky sweater is the perfect garment to stash your darkest secrets. If that doesn’t sound like your thing, look towards Harry Burns from When Harry Met Sally. These soft and muted colors might even lead you to a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers situationship.
Skirts with Tights
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is a classic sitcom about a not-so-classic family, in which Sabrina is often seen sporting a micro-mini velvet skirt with sheer tights underneath. Not only does this combination provide you with just the right amount of warmth for the chilly weather of fall, this witchy outfit will have you feeling very ready for Halloween. Another character whose presence also seems to cause commotion at school is the infamous fall favorite, Rory Gilmore. Her preppy, private school fashion has us constantly feeling a pull towards her charming life in Stars Hollow (pre-college Rory is superior). Rory’s preppy uniform would be great outfit inspiration for school!
Leather Jackets
No one wants to wear a huge, stuffy jacket on cool fall mornings. What is the solution? Leather jackets! Leather jackets are a quintessential fashion accessory that add interest to otherwise basic outfits. In Gilmore Girls, Lorelai Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham, wears a leather jacket throughout the series, which emphasizes her outgoing and driven nature. On the other hand, leather jackets could also be used to put on a cold, mean exterior as proven by Peyton Sawyer, played by Hilarie Burton, in One Tree Hill. Peyton can be characterized as rebellious and angry, but she is incredibly caring and passionate behind the facade of her leather jacket.
Fun Patterns
From fun patterns like stripes, to plaid, and animal prints, fall is the perfect time to showcase your unique style and lively personality through clothing. Classic prints like stripes and plaid are frequently featured in Lady Bird on the titular character. Lady Bird’s plaid jumper and striped tees stay authentic to what a rebellious, alternative teenager might wear and take inspiration from movies of the mid to late 90s and music genres. Fabrics like corduroy and prints like polka dots and stripes are featured on the stop-motion animals in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Although there are many menswear gems in this movie from the main character to the villains, you can’t forget the fashionable polka-dotted dresses worn by Mrs. Fox in the shape of apples!
Leopard Print
As Vogue has already reported, “The leopard print revival is upon us.” Buffy, the title character from the 90’s hit drama, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, slays more than just vampires. She has been rocking leopard print for many years before the trend’s re-emergence. Let it be known, this pattern is NOT cheetah print! The distinctly round print is eye-catching against the glow of the yellow leaves creating an effortless monochromatic look.
These iconic movies and TV shows have influenced Fall as the perfect time for intricate layering, fun colors, and interesting designs. We hope to see you use your imagination and personality to cultivate outfits that you feel confident, yet comfortable in this Autumn season.
